Description
Oregano has been used as a culinary and medicinal herb for thousands of years. It’s a staple herb for Mediterranean dishes like pasta sauce, soups, stews, vegetable dishes, and pizza. However, medicinally, Oregano has many therapeutic properties. Its leaves and flowering stems are strongly antiseptic, antispasmodic, carminative, cholagogue, diaphoretic, emmenagogue, expectorant, stimulant, stomachic and mildly tonic. In fact, Oregano is one of the best natural antiseptics because of its high thymol content. This perennial will return year after year to your medicinal and kitchen herb garden. Harvest the aerial parts (not the roots) in late summer, then dry and store for winter use. Fun Fact: Oregano also repels many insects making it a good companion plant in the vegetable garden.
