Description

Mullein is one of the most popular medicinal plants used by Herbalists. However, this biennial in the Scrophulariaceae family is often considered a weed. Mullein produces spikes of beautiful yellow flowers in its second year, but only large hair-covered leaves in its first. This easy-to-grow plant self-pollinates and drops hundreds of seeds that attract birds. Mullein leaves are one of the safest and most useful herbal lung tonics. Therapeutically, it has antiseptic and analgesic properties, works as an expectorant, and soothes mucous membranes of the respiratory tract. Mullein eases the symptoms of asthma, bronchitis, dry coughs, and laryngitis; it is a lymphatic cleanser, and helps skin issues. Fun Facts: its velvety leaves were once put in shoes to insulate from cold. Additionally, the leaves are a natural substitute for toilet paper. Fishermen used Mullein seeds to stun fish as they contain a mild toxin that does not affect humans. Download our Mullein Plant PDF Reference sheet.
