We are incredibly excited to be growing Medicinal Plants for the 2025 Season! Here’s what’s “Growing On” in the Herb & Vine Greenhouse:
Medicinal Plants that will be available this year:
Agrimony – right now, we just have one little guy who’s germinated. We’re hopeful this hard to germinate perennial will continue to sprout. Use Agrimonia eupatoria as a gargle for sore throat or taken as a tea for upset stomach or IBS.
Arnica – the yellow flowers of this creeping perennial are prized for their anti-inflammatory properties and analgesic action. Collect the flowers of Arnica chamissonis immediately after opening and use in creams, salves and ointments. We will have Arnica in 3″ and 6″ pots.
Ashwagandha – one of the most widely known adaptogens, this annual grows up to 3 feet tall x wide in a season. The entire plant is medicinal and interestingly enough, the fruit can be used as a soap substitute as it’s full of saponins. Find Withania somnifera in 3″ and 6″ pot sizes at this year’s market.
Basil – a popular choice for cooks, Ocimum basilicum is a staple of our plant line up. Seedlings are small as of this writing, but with three weeks to go, we expect some pretty nice size leaves on the plants that get chosen to go to market!
Burn Jelly Plant – we have just two Bulbine frutescens in 6″ pots that overwintered from last year’s crop. We did not seed “first aid plant” this year, but if you’d like an interesting alternative to Aloe, this is your jam right here!
Calendula – if you didn’t collect and start Calendula officinalis seeds from your plants purchased last year, don’t worry! We should have a handful of these amazing annuals at the market this season. The daisy like flowers of “pot marigold” are packed with vitamins and medicinal benefits, especially for skin.
Cayenne Pepper – we had an ABUNDANCE of these hot little red peppers from last year’s crop from which were made salves and culinary oil. This year we have started a few Capsicum frutescens annual plants for you to try. This amazing circulatory stimulant and heart-friendly spice is great for seasoning, skin, arthritis, and even as a rodent deterrent!
Chamomile – Roman Chamomile (the perennial creeper variety) is back this year. It’s one of the easiest herbs to grow and is very popular for tea drinkers. Chamaemelum nobile is great for relieving stress and anxiety and one of the most widely used herbs in the world, so how could we leave it out!?
Clary Sage – we were sad to have sold out without keeping one of this amazing biennials last year so we planted several. Sadly, only two have sprouted, so if this plant is on your wish list, you need to be at the first market on Saturday, April 5th! Salvia sclarea is digestive, liver protectant and amazing for combating stress.
Comfrey – you asked, we delivered! There will be lots of Symphytum officinale this year at the market in small, medium and likely large pots as the roots are super growers. Knitbone is super powerful for sprains, bruises and broken bones. It makes a great fertilizer too!
NEW FOR 2025! Coreopsis – this self-seeding annual is a member of the Asteraceae family and loves full sun. The beautiful orange and yellow flowers are amazing! Our Coreopsis tinctoria plants are growing FAST, so we’ll have 6″ and maybe some 1 gallon size plants ready for you this year. Read all about this plant here.
Feverfew – while they’ve been growing slowly, the seedlings of Tanacetum parthenium are growing and excited to go home with you! If you planted this in a sunny spot last year, your “Bachelors Button” plant may have survived the winter (ours did). But if not, we’ll have lots to choose from this year and if you suffer from headaches or migraines, this is your plant!
Lemongrass – was the #1 most requested plant last year and we did not have many to sell. But this year we’ve germinated an entire tray of Cymbopogon citratus for your culinary pleasure! Take Lemongrass as a tea to reduce anxiety, lower blood pressure and cholesterol, and relieve stomach pain.
Marshmallow – not sure why but this year’s crop of Althaea officinalis is thriving! This amazing perennial IS the original source of the marshmallow candy, but for us medicinal plant collectors, it’s mucilaginous compounds are highly valued for coughs and digestion. We have a three year old plant that’s loving the northeast corner of the yard and grows to about 6 foot tall before sprouting pretty pink and white flowers that resemble hibiscus. We should have 3″ and 6″ pots at the market.
Mimosa – this was my absolute favorite tree as a kid! I absolutely loved the pink flowers and strung the seeds as necklaces. I have a few Albizia julibrissin trees that were started from seed last year, overwintered in the greenhouse and should be leafing out soon. And as soon as they do, they’ll be available at the market.
Motherwort – The official Motherwort, Leonurus cardiaca, will be back this year as a few of the plants we grew last year were overwintered. While we did not plant new seeds this time around, if you are in the market for Motherwort, be quick!
Nasturtiums – Empress and Climbing (new this year). The peppery flowers are 100% edible and make amazing food and baked good garnish!!
Rosemary – Small but mighty! A 3″ Salvia rosmarinus can grow to be about 1-2 foot this summer if planted in the right place. Everyone knows the fragrance of this culinary gem that’s also great for so many medicinal uses.
Sage – one of my favorites to keep close as I can’t resist the aroma of fresh Salvia officinalis! Common garden sage has tons of uses for cooking and as a therapeutic. So, we had to plant it again this year! Right now, seedlings are small but we’re hoping the little engine that could is ready in a few weeks to go home with you!
Speedwell – Enjoy the leaves of Veronica officinalis in a tea that sooths cough. Use in a lotion for slow healing wounds.
Vicks Plant – clear those pollen ridden noses with the smell of the Vicks Vapor Rub in a plant! This succulent is one of the most unusual and surprising gems at our booth!
Yarrow – no herbal garden would be complete without the king of bleed stops. Use Yarrow for a wide variety of ailments. Find Achillea millefolium at our booth, but be sure to plant it where you won’t mind the spread!! Ours bloom white – the most medicine-packed variety.
Medicinal Plants started by SPECIAL REQUEST:
Borage – we’ve had a special request to grow Starflower from a customer. So far, two of six seedlings have emerged.
Meadowsweet – last year, we had Filipendula ulmaria growing out of our ears, but this year… the seeds are being stubborn… Not sure we’ll be able to fulfil this request, but we’ll keep trying!
Medicinal Plants that are MAYBES this year:
There are several seeds/cuttings we’re hoping will germinate/root in time for this year’s market including: Betony, Vitex, Catnip, Chives, Echinacea, Elderberry, Lemon Balm, Mullein, Oregano, Patchouli, Stinging Nettle, Tulsi Basil, Toothache Plant, and Valerian.
See you bright and early at the Jasper Farmer’s Market on April 5th! If you’d like to shop early from the list above, reach out by text or DM us on social. Happy Planting!
