Description
Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera) is an annual medicinal herb in the Solanaceae family. Here in North Georgia you can overwinter Ashwagandha plants indoors. Ashwagandha is also called Indian Ginseng as it is one of the most widespread adaptogens used in Ayurvedic medicine. In fact, it holds a position of importance very similar to Chinese Ginseng.
Utilize the entire plant, but the leaves and root bark have the most active constituents. Herbalists use Ashwagandha for its abortifacient, adaptogenic, antibiotic, aphrodisiac, diuretic, narcotic, strongly sedative and tonic properties. Thus, this medicinal plant may help calm the brain, reduce swelling, lower blood pressure, and alter the immune system. Fun Fact: Ashwagandha seeds are used to curdle plant milks to make vegetarian cheeses. Its fruit is rich in saponins and can be used as a soap substitute; and its leaves are a natural insect repellent. Download our Ashwagandha Plant PDF Reference sheet.
