Description
Elecampane is a perennial in the Asteraceae (daisy) family. Elecampane root has a long history of use as a medicinal herb as this gently warming and tonic herb is effective in treating coughs, bronchitis, asthma, whooping cough, tuberculosis and other complaints of the chest as well as disorders of the digestive system. This bronco-spasmolytic, expectorant and antimicrobial plant is a tonic for the lungs. Elecampane root contains inulin, a prebiotic supportive of a healthy gut. Also note, this plant spreads aggressively by thick, fleshy roots that produce new shoots and is therefore often considered a weed. Here’s a fun fact: Elecampane root is one of the ingredients used in the preparation of absinthe. Download our Elecampane PDF Reference sheet.
