Description

Marshmallow is a perennial in the Malvacaea family. Ancient Greek doctors used its roots to treat wounds and
insect bites, as well as to relieve toothaches and constipation. The leaves and roots of Marshmallow are rich in mucilaginous compounds which helps sooth inflamed mucous membranes, expelling mucous from the lungs and bronchial tubes. Today, Herbalists use Marshmallow to relieve dry cough, as well as upset and irritable digestion. Externally, it can draw fluid and toxicity from wounds and infections. Taken in small dosages, it is anti-diarrhea. However, in larger dosages, Marshmallow is a gentle laxative. In addition, its young shoots and leaves can be eaten in salads, soups and stews. Fun fact: modern marshmallow candy was once made from the plant’s roots. Download our Marshmallow Plant PDF Reference sheet.
