Description

Common or Garden Sorrel is a perennial herb in the Polygonaceae family. Sorrel is a good choice for the edible herb or vegetable garden. However, it’s also perfect for containers as a ‘filler’ or a ‘thriller’ in the ‘spiller-thriller-filler’ combination. The plant is rich in Vitamin C, fiber, and beta-carotene. However, it also contains oxalic acid, and therefore should not be consumed in large quantities. Its leaves have a tangy lemon flavor. Medicinally, Sorrel has been used to treat inflammation, cancer, diarrhea, scurvy and fever. Use the stems and leaves to brew a diuretic tea that also cools a fever. Cook, dry, powder the roots to make into noodles; and use its seeds (raw or cooked) ground into a powder and combined with flour to make bread. Fun Fact: juice the leaves and use it to curdle milk.
