Description

Valerian or All Heal is a hardy perennial medicinal plant in the Caprifoliaceae family. This aromatic herb was carried by Medieval bridegrooms to ward off sprites. It is rumored the Pied Piper used Valerian to entice the rats. Valerian flowers are white to pink with a unique aroma, but its roots and rhizomes are what is used medicinally. This sedative plant has been used historically to treat insomnia and anxiety. Its antispasmodic properties may have a positive effect on cramps and muscle spasms.  It is also hypnotic, sedative, nervine, anodyne, anxiolytic, hypotensive, and relaxant. Harvest its roots and rhizomes for use in capsules, tinctures, powders and decoctions. Valerian is also used in foods, perfumes, tinctures and teas. Cats are attracted to the plant as they are with Catnip. Download our Valerian Plant PDF Reference sheet
