Description
White Horehound (Marrubium vulgare) is a perennial in the Lamiaceae (mint) family. This plant has been used in herbal medicine since the 1st century. White Horehound is an expectorant and tonic that is generally considered safe for use by adults and children. White Horehound is often made into a tea, syrup or candy in order to disguise its very bitter taste. Horehound is used for lung and breathing problems including cough, whooping cough, asthma, tuberculosis, bronchitis, and swollen breathing passages. It is also helpful for digestion, diabetes, appetite, indigestion, bloating and gas, liver and gallbladder complaints. This medicinal plant thins mucus secretions, reduces spasms in the stomach and intestines, and decreases inflammation. Fun fact: its root, used equally with Plantago lanceolata, is a remedy for rattlesnake bites. Download our White Horehound Plant PDF Reference sheet.
